Stephen Chow, born on June 22, 1962, in Hong Kong, is originally from Ningbo, Zhejiang. He is a renowned Chinese-language comedy actor, director, screenwriter, producer, and executive producer.
He began his career as a contract actor for TVB in 1980. In early 1988, he ventured into film, starring in notable movies such as God of Gamblers, Fight Back to School, Flirting Scholar, and A Chinese Odyssey. He wrote, directed, and starred in numerous films including Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, The God of Cookery, and King of Comedy. Stephen Chow has broken the Hong Kong box office record six times and has won the Hong Kong Film Annual Box Office Champion eight times, setting records for the number of times breaking box office records and winning annual box office champions.
In 2003, he was named “Person of the Year” by Time magazine and became a cover figure for “Asian Heroes.” His 2004 film Kung Fu Hustle grossed HK$61.27 million at the Hong Kong box office, breaking records and was listed by Time magazine as one of the “Top 10 Movies of 2005.” In 2013, his film Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons set 23 Chinese film box office records, with a global box office of $218 million, refreshing the record for Chinese films globally.
